What do you think can lead people to a successful life? Many people will say it is intelligence. However, here is the story of a man with an IQ of 75, who becomes a superstar and millionaire. He is Forrest Gump from the movie Forrest Gump. The story takes place in the US from 1950 to 1980.
When he is born, Forrest has a back “crooked like a politician.” He needs braces around his legs in order to walk. He always walks very slowly. When he gets on the bus on the first day of primary school, no one wants to share their seat with him. However, one girl named Jenny says he can sit next to her.
From this day on, they become very close, like “peas and carrots,” and always hang out together. One day, while on their way home, bullies throw stones at Forrest. At this moment, Jenny shouts to Forrest, “Run! Forrest! Run!” and, like a miracle, he starts to run for the first time in his life. Later, when he becomes a high school student, he is running away from some bullies when he is discovered by a college football coach. So he enters the college on a scholarship and becomes an amazing football player.
After college, he signs up for the army. In the army he becomes best friends with Bubba, who wants to start a shrimping business once the war is over. He and Forrest swear that they’ll go into business together after the war. The two of them ship off to join the Vietnam War. There, their troop is raided by the enemy. Forrest saves several soldiers who are injured. Although he attempts to save his close friend, Bubba dies due to a severe injury.
While saving others, he is shot in the buttocks and is hospitalized. There, someone recommends that he play ping-pong. This is where he discovers that he is a gifted ping-pong player. He is sent to Beijing to play ping-pong as part of President Richard Nixon’s Ping-pong diplomacy, and becomes a ping-pong star.
With the money he earns, he buys a shrimp boat in order to keep the promise he made with Bubba. He names the boat Jenny. He catches lots of shrimp on the boat and earns millions of dollars. Later, when his mother becomes sick, he returns to his hometown before she passes away. Finally, his long-lost friend Jenny returns to their hometown, and they get married.
Forrest’s life is a series of unexpected chances. Just as his mother tells him when he is a child, “Life is like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re gonna get.” He moves through life like a feather blowing in the wind, and loves others with an open heart. Maybe this was why he can taste so many delicious kinds of chocolate in his life.
