“Counterattack of coronavirus variants”

Lately, some rich countries which secured sufficient quantities of a vaccine and inoculated a significant number of their population earlier than other countries, started to declare an end to the war on COVID-19.  Last June the UK held its first live concert since the beginning of the pandemic. Celebrating US Independence Day last Sunday, the US President Joe Biden said, “Today, we are closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus.” Some countries including Norway, Israel, and Singapore also declared an end to the war on COVID-19.

However, as the virus mutates in poor countries which have not received vaccines, powerful variants like the Delta variant have emerged and have been spreading all over the world, including the rich countries. Some of these variants are much more infectious and may cause more severe illness. The daily number of COVID-19 cases in the UK and the US has started to increase again now that restrictions are lifted.

In fact, some rich countries consider that they can protect their people safely if they achieve herd immunity. More than 80 percent of vaccines have gone to rich nations, with poorer countries receiving a paltry 0.3 percent.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “No one is safe until everyone is safe,” at the G20 Global Health Summit held in Rome. To end the global pandemic and prevent more dangerous COVID-19 variants from emerging, global collaboration is crucial to the development and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. To achieve this, manufacturing capacity should be doubled, using all options such as voluntary licenses, technology transfers, patent pooling and “flexibility” on intellectual property. Given the spread of COVID-19, any country, even the superrich can’t live alone anymore.
